Abstract

PT PJTEK Mandiri is an inspection company that conducts certification and verification activities in industrial fields, particularly welding-related processes. Industrial development requires welders to improve welding quality and reduce nonconformities during qualification. This study aims to analyze quality control of welder qualification at PT PJTEK Mandiri using the seven tools approach. The 2022 welder qualification inspection data were collected and analyzed using a check sheet, Pareto diagram, and cause-and-effect (fishbone) diagram. The results show 289 defect findings from 1,616 qualification processes. The most dominant defect was undercut with 105 findings or 36% of total defects, followed by porosity at 22%. The fishbone analysis indicates that the main cause of undercut defects was dominated by human factors, including lack of accuracy, rushing during welding, operator fatigue, and non-compliance with welding procedures. Machine, method, material, and work environment factors also contributed to the occurrence of defects. Improvement recommendations include strengthening compliance with the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), calibrating welding machines, conducting initial material checks, and improving pre-inspection supervision by welding inspectors.
